Barry Bonds Blasts #756 To Become New Home Run King!

It was a 3-2 fastball that former Sun Devil Barry Bonds fittingly sent soaring to deep right center field, the ball traveled 435 feet into the bleachers and the frenzy ensued. It was a classic at bat, in which Barry nearly grounded out on a breaking ball the previous pitch. Bonds took the Home Run Crown 3 days after moving into a tie with Hank Aaron at 755. Aaron contratulated Bonds on the video scoreboard following the blast. It was an all around great day for the slugger as Bonds went 3 for 3 with a single, double and home run.

Hank Aaron Gets Company From Former Sun Devil

After spending over three decades all alone at the top of the major league alltime HR leaderboard, Hank Aaron gets some brief company from Barry Bonds, as he temporarely shares a slot with Aaron at the top of the list. Quite soon however; the former Arizona State star will continue past Hank as he is poised to shatter baseball's most hallowed record as the Giants will return to AT&T park on Monday for a homestand. Barry Bonds belted number 755 in his first at bat tonight at Petco Park in San Diego, homering off Clay Hensley, Hensley becomes the 455th pitcher for Bonds to homer off of. It was Bonds' 88th homer off the Padres in his career. Bonds celebrated with his family and even received a cell phone call from his older daughter during his press conference.
Commisioner Bud Selig looked confused and wasn't too emotional during the homerun, he seemingly couldn't tell if the ball even made it over the fence and looked quite dumbfounded, perhaps he was drunk! Former Sun Devils Barry Bonds and Reggie Jackson are among baseballs alltime HR leader list.

Preseason Coaches Poll Out!

The preseason Coaches Poll is out today and there isn't much surprise at the top. The USC Trojans check in at number one and the LSU Tigers are following them up at #2. There are however; a few surprises! First, the Duke Blue Devils , winners of 9 of their past 81 games and 1 of their past 25 conference games Duke managed to receive 1 vote. My guess is Steve Spurrier voted for them, he did after all, coach Duke to the ACC title in 1989 before bolting for greener pastures at the swamp.
Another surprise, Arizona , the Wildcats, U of A has gone 28-52 this century and has not made a bowl game since 1998. Mike Stoops has gone 12-22 as head coach and managed to get a vote, my guess, Big Brother Bob, at Oklahoma hooked him up.
And perhaps the biggest surprise of them all, Notre Dame is not in the preseason top 25. Stop the press, could it be, no Irish in the Top 25. Now I'm going to have to rethink my most overrated teams for the preseason. That's a whole other post, coming soon,the most overrated and underrated teams of 2007! One of the greatest football coaches ever passed away today following a battle with leukemia. Bill Walsh, former Stanford Cardinal and San Francisco 49er coach, who invented the West Coast Offense, died at the age of 75.

It's official, USC is the unanimous preseason choice to win the conf. The media has correctly picked the conf winner in 24 of the past 27 seasons. Stanford Coach Jim Harbough proclaimed
the Trojans as probably the greatest team ever, this , just weeks after he stated that he thought this would be Pete Carroll's last season in LA.

2007 Eyes On The Prize

The Pacific Ten conference is often a preseason crap shoot. Who will win? Typically there are always 3 or 4 teams who are considered serious conteners. At least that was the mantra of the 90s and early into the 21st century. That all changed 2003 when USC won it's first conference title since 1995, and they haven't relinquished it yet. This season, the Trojans will attempt to win their 5th straight conference title. And they just may have the talent, coaching and experience to do just that.
With NFL prospects peppering the lineups on both sides of the ball, things are definately on track in LA. But there are concerns, with the loss of Reggie Bush, Lendale White and Matt Leinhart, the Trojans struggled to put teams away throughout the season and ultimately dropped 2 conference road games. That's definately not too shabby after losing 2 Heisman winners and a load of NFL talent. This season the Trojan O backfield will be deep, loaded and experienced as they return QB Jon David Booty and a trio of complimentary RBs. The big ? is how bad , if at all, the loss of Dwayne Jarret and Steve Smith (both to the NFL) will be.
It's definately the Trojans title to take.

So that brings up the race for second.
The most likely canidate on paper is UCLA or CAL. It seems to me the Ducks are still out of synch at the QB position and has a defense that gives up far too many big plays, at home the Ducks are nearly unstoppable, but on the road they are merely average. CAL also loses a ton of talent, including AA DB Damien Huyghes and all conference LB Desmond Bishop. Offensively CAL loses perhaps it's best running back in 20 years in Marshawn Lynch. The do have offensive talent in the wings, Defense will be the key for CAL. They will be tested early, as they host Tennessee in the season opener.
Next up is Arizona State, who , like Oregon and UCLA has been quite erratic recently. The Devils have had the most interesting offseason as they hired the controversial and very successful Dennis Erickson. Erickson inherits and experienced QB, Oline and a horse in the backfield by the name of Ryan Torrain. Torrain rushed for 1279yds and 7 TDs last season in 10 starts and is the prototypical back for a Dennis Erickson pro style spread offense. Like CAL and Oregon, ASU's defense has been a dissappointment recently, particularly in big games and the 4th quarter.

The Beavers played by far thier best ball of the season, out hitting , outpitching and outfielding the competition.

Sun Devil Player Lives the Dream

CJ Retherford has been red hot this post season, so hot in fact, that coach Pat Murphy moved him into the lead off slot for the CWS. Retherford has 4 HRs in the postseason and ASU is 6-0 as a team this postseason. Rehterford used to dream of hitting a HR in Omaha as a child, on Saturday, his dream came true as he homered over left center field in the fifth inning to tie the game at 5.

Pac Ten Starts 2-0 At The CWS

Arizona State and Oregon State both were victorious in their opening games in Omaha on Saturday, ASU scored 5 runs on three HR's and got some outstanding pitching to down UC Irvine 5-4 and Oregon State began it's quest to defend it's title by downing Cal State Fullerton 3-2. The Beavers got some great pitching as well. The two teams meet on Monday in a winner's bracket matchup.

It's familiar faces back in Omaha this year, as the Arizona State Sun Devils make their 20th appearance in Omaha and the Oregon State Beavers return to defend their 2006 National Title. The Sun Devils enter the game having won 24 of their last 27 and boast the nations highest batting average and fielding percentage. ASU has won the College World Series 5 times and finished runner up 5 times.The Devils are led by the Pac Ten Player of the year Brett Wallace (.420ave 16HR 78RBI), Pac Ten defensive player of the year Eric Sogard and starting pitchers Mike Leake(13W) Josh Satow(12W) and Brian Flores(10W).
The Beavers got hot late in the season and have won 8 of 10. Oregon State is led on the mound by pitchers Joe Patterson (10W),and Mike Stutes and Daniel Turpin with 9 wins a piece. Mike Lissman (.323ave 8HR 56RBI) and Mitch Carnham (.319ave 9HR 54RBI) provide threats from the plate. Here are the teams in Omaha this season and my rankings.

Super Regionals

Arizona State will host Ole Miss this weekend in Tempe, beginning on Saturday. The Devils bats will be the difference in this one!

Oregon State hosts Michigan in Corvallis, the Beavers pitching should propel them back to Omaha as well.

UCLA heads down the 405 a few clicks to take on Cal State Fullerton with a trip to Omaha on the line. The Bruins must score many runs to get out of Fullerton, should be a good series, but Fullerton wins.

Baseball Field of 64 Announced

The Field of 64 has been announced for the Road to Omaha. Four Pac Ten Teams are in, with Arizona State leading the way as a #5 national seed and regional host(#1 Tempe Regional). Here's the rest of the teams, Oregon State(3# Virginia Regional) , UCLA (#2 Long Beach Regional) and Arizona (#2 Wichita Regional). Play begins Friday.

ASU Clinches Pac Ten Baseball Title and POY honors

The Arizona State Baseball team clinched the Pac Ten conf title by defeating archrival Arizona last night 8-5 in Tempe. The Devils are currently ranked #6 in the nation and will be hosting a regional. The Devils are hoping to land a national top 8 seed to ensure they stay at home for the Supers as well.
ASU sophomore Brett Wallace was also named the Pac Ten player of the year in Baseball. Wallace is hitting .425 with 15HR and 73RBI.
Eric Sogard was named Defensive POY.

Take Out The Papers And The Trash

It's hard to imagine college football without JoPa roaming the sidelines. Last season Penn State's icon suffered a broken leg late in the season on a sideling play. The always rough , tough and rugged JoPa nearly had to be forced off the field. He limped off on his own power and into the locker room. Following positive xrays, the coach had to coach the final season game and the bowl game from high above in the coaches booth. This season JoPa's back in the news as he is as disciplined as ever. Nice to see these principle's still existent in today's society.Following a brawl at an off campus apartment complex, involving nearly 15 Penn State football players (2 of which face criminal charges) JoPa has stated that
the Penn State football team will clean Beaver Stadium after each home football game this fall. It'll gather garbage, sweep stairs and maybe even hose parts down. This task is normally done by the club sports teams to raise money. They will still get paid.

Pac Ten Baseball Update

With their second consecutive conference sweep, the Sun Devils clinch at least a tie for the pac ten conference championship. The Devils swept Oregon State this weekend and lead the pac ten by 3 games over archrival Arizona, and the two teams meet this weekend in Tempe. The teams have split their two previous games this season. The Sun Devils will most definately host a regional, and with a series win this weekend, the Devils may very well end up with a top 8 national seed, thus securing a super regional bid as well. Arizona is currently in second place in conf 3 games back from the Devils. UCLA, is in third. The Bruins and the Cal Bears remain on the bubble for postseason. The Beavers will most likely get in despite their poor conf record. For a list of the conf standings, click here.

Last week I was 5-2, bringing my season total to 20-5, I came really close in total pts and score for UO vs UO and Stephen F Austin vs UA.
Here are the week 4 picks:

Arizona State at California: One of just 2 matchups this week between ranked teams. CAL has owned ASU under Tedford, but CAL was seemingly overrated and they have ?s at QB, secondary and Oline. ASU has surprisingly been more consistent on Defense this season and leads the nation in sacks and TFL I'm calling for the slight upset in Berkeley.
My Call:

Wazzu at Stanford: The Cardinal have been absolutely atrocious, even their passing game has been lackluster and their Secondary is horrid.
My Call:
Wazzu 31 Stanford 20

UCLA at Washington: Could be a dangerous game for the Bruins, the Huskies showed signs of life vs Fresno State. UCLA too much offensive punch though.
My Call:
UCLA 34 UW 24

Idaho at Oregon State: Beavers will score many, many pts, rought night for Coach Erikson as he returns to Corvallis.
My Call:
Oregon State 38 Idaho 14

USC at Arizona: The Wildcats are still looking like the 3-8 teams of Stoops, their offense will be lucky to reach the endzone. USCs WRs will scorch the overrated Wildcats secondary and pound the ball all night.

Week 3 Conf Picks

Last week I was 7-2 in my conf picks, bringing my season total to 14-3. As conf play approaches , there are some good intersectionals this weekend.

Nebraska @ USC: Nebraska has played two creampuffs and is seemingly over confident, the mediocre Husker offense will have trouble scoring on SC. Meanwhile the Blackshirts will not be able to contain SCs offense.
My Call: USC 34 Huskers 17

Oklahoma @ Oregon: A very difficult game to gauge, Oklahoma has been starting slow and finishing strong, if they start too slow in Autzen it could spell doom. A rematch of the Holiday Bowl, should be just as close
My Call: Oregon 31 Oklahoma 28

Baylor @ Wazzu: Wazzu looked great vs Idaho, and Baylor is looking quite competitive as well, should be a close one, Wazzu's skill position players a bit too much.
My Call: Wazzu 35 Baylor 27

Fresno St @ UW: Anytime anywhere and Fresno, as always will fight like rabid dogs. Speaking of anytime anywhere, when will the Huskie Football Program return.

Arizona State @ Colorado: This game looked great on paper a couple years back, CU is rebuilding harder than anyone thought and has lost 5 straight dating back from last season. ASU looked much better in week 2.

Portland State @ CAL: No amount of running it up will make up for Tennessee.
My Call: CAL 49 Portland State 7

Navy @ Stanford: Will the Furd win this season. Navy boasts a solid ground game and good run defense. Stanford Rec's too much for Midshipman secondary.

Stephen F Austin @ Arizona: Im not sure if Arizona or Stephen F Austing played in Baton Rouge last week, couldn't tell. The only thing worse than Arizona's play on the field is either Coach Stoops sideline antics or those red jerseys.

Well, week 1 was interesting to say the least, there were many surprises in how teams looked , but not too many surprises in the W/L column. Yours truly went 7-1 in week 1, losing only the UA vs BYU prediction, as the Cats edged out BYU on a last second field goal 16-13. USC was quite impressive on the road vs Arkansas and Oregon was quite impressive at home vs Stanford. The rest of the teams are still a bit of an enigma at this point. CAL looked horrible vs Tennessee in Knoxville, my guess is, Tennessee is improved quite a bit, and CAL is a bit overrated, we will see if the Bears can recover and handle the Minnesota Gophers at Strawberry Hill this weekend. Here's the week two predictions.

Thursday Sept 7th, Oregon State @ Boise State:
This should be quite an exciting game featuring some intense play and big plays all around. These two teams have developed somewhat of a regional OOC rivalry the past few seasons, last season Oregon State edged Boise in Corvallis.

Congratulations to the Oregon State Beavers for winning the 2006 College World Series. The Beavers rallied often and late during their incredible run in Omaha. UNC could smell the title, after defeating OSU in game 1 of the best of 3, UNC led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Thats when the Beavers scored 7 and went on the cruise to an 11-7 win to force a game 3. The Beavers scored in the bottom of the 8th and Beaver reliever Gunderson came in for the final out, after pitching 5 1/3 innings of relief in game 2 for the win! This is Oregon States first ever National Title in Baseball!

Mavericks eliminate Suns, will face Heat in NBA finals

Spring Football

USC: With QB Booty out for back surgery and RB Hershel Dennis out for next season, the Trojans have some personell to evaluate and some major offensive holes to fill, QBs Mark Sanchez and Michael MacDonald are getting valueable reps in Booty's absence, Sanchez has been working the most with the first team and threw a TD in USCs spring scrimmage game, MacDonald had 3 TD passes.
There has been a commitee of running backs getting reps as this will be a very inexperienced offensive backfield next season, a stark contrast from the trio of Leinhart, Bush and White last season.

UCLA: The Bruin Defense played well in their spring scrimmage and will seemingly be an improved squad over last season. At quarterback , Soph Ben Olson has gotten a majority of the reps, although coach Dorrell has opened the slot for competition, the true starter will not be known until August.

CAL: Bears seeking QB to emerge in Spring Ball. Last season QB was a nagging inconsistency in the otherwise efficient and dangerous Bear offense. Nate Longshore was the starter last season before breaking his ankle. Joseph Ayoob replaced him , but struggled most of the season before being benched down the stretch for Steve Levy. Coach Tedford will be scrutinizing his QBs all offseason. Longshore seems like the favorite to date.

Arizona State: The Sun Devils may have the best QB lineup in the conf next season with SR. Sam Keller and RS/JR Rudy Carpenter, both QBs were spectacular last season. ASU is seeking much improvement on the defensive end and must find LB replacements for Dale Robinson and Jamar Williams.

Oregon: Drawing the most attention among questions in need of being sorted through is expected to be the battle at quarterback between juniors Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf. The Ducks will return many defensive players from last
season.

Bruins in Final Four

The UCLA Bruins turned it on vs #1 seed Memphis to advance to the final four with the win. UCLA now faces red hot LSU, who's interior domination has vaulted the Tigers to the final four as well with big wins over Duke and Texas. Earlier in the tourney UCLA made an improbable comeback vs Gonzaga, the Bruins overcame a 17pt deficit and led for less than 30 seconds of the game.
This will be UCLAs 16th appearance in the Final Four, tying UNC for the most ever! The Bruins have won 11 titles, the most ever! Joning the Bruins and Tigers are the Florida Gators and the George Mason Patriots.

UCLA and Washington have advanced to the sweet sixteen. The Huskies took down last years final four runner up Illinois 67-64, rallying from a late 10 point deficit. UW faces UCONN in the round of 16. The Bruins held on late to defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide 62-59 despite missing 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch, UCLA faces Gonzaga in the round of 16. Arizona faces #1 seed Villanova Sunday morning and can make it three Pac Ten teams in the sweet sixteen with a win. The Pac Ten is 5-1 in the tourney thus far.

The Pac Ten posted a very impressive 3-1 record in the first round of the tourney. UCLA hammered belmont 78-44, Arizona cruised by Wisconsin 94-75 and UW dispatched Utah St. 75-61. CAL was the lone loss, as they fell to NC State by a score of 58-52. UCLA and Arizona looked very impressive in their wins. UW kicked it into gear in the final 10 minutes to finish strong.

Big Dance Set

The Pacific Ten conference has 4 teams in the big dance this year. The seedings pretty much worked out as I predicted on March 3. UCLA finished the season strong running the table in the Pac Ten tourney and defeating CAL handily in the conf championship game. UCLA ends up with a much coveted #2 seed (I predicted a 3/4 seed) and perhaps the easiest region (if such a thing exists) If Gonzaga or Memphis struggle the Bruins could be in the elite 8 or dare I say the final four. UW went out a bit early in the conf tourney and has struggled defensively at times, UW is a finesse team with very good quickness and scoring capability, they may be in for a tough time as they will most likely face Illinois in round 2. UW recieved a 5 seed, I predicted a 5/6 seed. CAL made a good run in the tourney and came back from a double digit deficit late in the first half vs the Bruins, but got run in the second half. CAL also has an extremely tough first round game vs a potential bracket buster in NC State. CAL is a 7 seed I predicted they would be an 8/9 seed. Arizona rounds out the conf teams and is an 8 seed, yours truly predicted they would be a 7 or 8 seed. The Cats face a dangerous Wisconsin squad and without suspended forward Hasaan Adams, the Cats may be heading for one of their infamous early round exits. Then again, it was an unheralded #5 seed led by Freshman Mike Bibby and Richard Jefferson that ran the table to win it all in 1997.

Heres how I predict the Pac Ten finishing in the tourney.

UCLA- Loses to Duke in Final Four (Ben Howland and a relatively healthy squad step up bigtime)

CAL-Loses to NC State in round 1 (CAL guards inconsistent, not enough help for Leon Powe)

Washington-Loses in second round to Illinois (Defense inconsistent , not physical enough for Illini)

Arizona-Loses to Wisconsin in round 1 (Cats chemistry not there, missing Adams and lackluster play from Mustafa Shakur)

Former Sun Devil Football Player Heads To Iraq

Jeremy Staat , who played football for the Arizona State Sun Devils, was a friend and teammate of Pat Tillman. He said that Tillman was influential in his decision to join the Marines and serve his country. Jeremy graduated Marine boot camp today and will head to Iraq for a 14 month deployment. Jeremy was drafted in the second round of the NFL draft in 1998 and played 5 seasons in the NFL for the Pittsburg Steelers and St. Louis Rams.

Arizona State Freshman Ike Davis named college baseball's national player of the week, Ike was 1-0 on the mound and belted two grand slams. ASU was 4-0 on the week defeating Texas Tech and sweeping Auburn.

As we near the end of the college basketball regular season there is a distinct difference between the upper pac ten teams (UCLA,UW,CAL,UA,STAN) and the lower tier teams (USC,ORE,WSU,ASU,OSU). This season all ten teams will be participating in the tournament. I expect the tourney results to mimic the regular season as there is virtually no shot at any of the lower tier teams to win a game except for USC.
First lets look at the contenders (who will be in the Big Dance)

UCLA-Ben Howland is back and this time he has UCLA primed for a conf championship and a legit shot at a 2 or 3 seed with a strong finish, the Bruins
have a good core of talent and offensive firepower, Farmar is the on the court leader and he has a host of playmakers at his disposal, UCLA transitions well and can score from all over the floor.

Washington-The Huskies score , score and score, they are fast, athletic and did I mention can score a lot of points. Led by Sr. Brandon Roy, this team has talent and post season experience, they should get further in the dance than last season.

CAL-The Bears have a great inside game, led by Leon Powe, and some power on the glass, they must get good play from their guards to compliment the size inside.

UA-The Cats have seemingly underachieved this season and have struggled on the road and with team chemistry, they have some great athletes, but must get better play from Shakur and hit the outside 3's to go deep in the tourney.

Stanford must win down the stretch and get to the conf championship IMO to make it to the tourney, the Cardinals 15-11 overall mark is a bubble set to burst without a late season run.

Heres how I see the seeding looking like right now:

UCLA (RPI 15) 23 wins : 3/4 seed
UW (RPI 30) 23 wins: 5/6 seed
UA (RPI 20) 18 wins: 7/8 seed
CAL (RPI 50) 17 wins: 8/9 seed

The Stanford Tree was fired after being busted getting drunk during the CAL-Stanford basketball game in Berkeley last week. The mascot blew a .157 in a breathalyzer test. Cal won the game 65-62.

Former Husky Nate Robinson Wins Slam Dunk Contest

Former Washington Huskie Nate Robinson won the NBA slam dunk contest Saturday with a little help from former Champion Spud Webb. Webb and Robinson are the only two sub 6 ft tall players to ever win the contest. Robinson leaped over Spud for the contest clinching Dunk. Andre Iguodala , a former Wildcat also finished in the top 4. The Allstar game is Sunday.

With the 2005/2006 recruits getting signed, its once again USC at the top. The Trojans continue to rake in the top tier high school footballers from up and down the state of California and from around the nation. Pete Carroll has done a great job at keeping the cupboard full and utilizing and developing great talent from great recruits, the Trojans loaded up and running backs and Db's.
In an attempt to beef up the lines and compliment the skill positions with some muscle, the Bruins went heavy on O and D linemen. Jeff Tedford continues to turn the CAL program around once again hauling in some speedy, athletic prospects including some highly touted running backs to tutor behind the already talented Marshaun Lynch and Justing Forsett.Bob Stoops brought in some big muscle for his Dline as well as some Jucos in his seemingly second straight solid class. And rounding out the top 5 , Arizona State gets even more talent in its already heavy arsenal of skill position talent, landing highly touted running back and recievers, ASU also went heavy on DBs.

Colin Curtis : Cancer Survivor

For Arizona State's Colin Curtis, the fierce competition on the diamond is hardly a life or death affair, the Arizona State Sophomore was diagnosed with testicular cancer his Freshman year in high school and underwent extensive surgery in 1999 to remove it. Curtis was a sparkplug last season for the Sun Devils and really came into his own down the stretch and into the postseason. This year the Arizona State Slugger leads the Devils in batting and truly the sky seems to be the limit.

Well another NFL season in the books and another Super Bowl as well. This years superbowl between the underdog Pittsburg Steelers and NFC juggernaut Seattle Seahawks was a game without an identity. The entire week leading up to the game very little was heard or seen of either teams, in fact there was more chatter on Brett Favre's possible retirement than Super Bowl XL. Not until Wednesday did things heat up in the media when Joey Porter and Jerramy Stevens began to exchange billboard material. Seattle came out strong early but was unable to put points on the board after marching up the field on a couple of occasions. Pitt scrapped its way back in the game when Ben Roethlisberger scrambled way out of the pocket and hit Hienz Ward for first and goal. Pitt then came out and quickly scored in the second half on a 76 yd TD run by Willie Parker (the longest in Superbowl history). Pitt was seemingly set to run away with in until Roethlisberger threw an interception to Kelly Herdon and it was returned to the Pittsburg 10, but in the end, Pitt wore out Seattle and won 21-10. There were 11 pac ten alums on the field 5 from Pittsburg (Marvel Smith ASU, Tommy Maddox UCLA, Travis Kirschke UCLA, Chidi Iwuoma CAL and Troy Palamalu USC) and 6 from Seattle (Maurice Morris ORE, Jerramy Stevans UW, Robbie Tobeck WSU, Marcus Trufant WSU and Lofa Tatupu USC). If you caught the introduction of the previous Superbowl MVPs and happened to wonder, yes there were a few notables missing, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw were apparently not offered enough cash to participate!
A few things I got from the game. The AFC was by far the superior conf this season (Pitt #6 seed beats NFC #1 Seed Seattle). Pitt, Denver and Indy were all better than Seattle. The pregame motown jams sucked. The commercials sucked this year (2 million for a 30 second add and that was the best they could muster). The Stones sucked (enough of those guys already). The broadcast did go smoother than the past few years, this years game was like an hour shorter than last years. Anyways, I'll take the bowl games over the superbowl any day of the year.

Baseball Coaches Pick Beavers

The Pac Ten baseball coaches have chose Oregon State as their preseason favorite to win the conf this season. The Beavers won the league title last season in route to a CWS appearance. Arizona State also advanced to the CWS. The Pac Ten has had at least one participant in the CWS every season since 1996 and 24 times since 1978.

Stanford Stadium ranked among Div 1A's oldest venues. The stadium was built in 1921 and sat just over 85 thousand. Construction of Stanford Stadium in the early 1920s was fueled by a competition with the University of California at Berkeley to see which school could complete its stadium first. Stanford won that contest, but Rose Bowl-bound Berkeley beat Stanford 42-7 in the first-ever game played at Stanford Stadium, on Nov. 19, 1921. Stanford Stadium hosted Super Bowl XIX in 1985 and the 1984 Olympic Soccer games. Immediately following this seasons finale vs Notre Dame, the wrecking crew came in and began demolition of the Stadium to make way for the all new Stanford Stadium. I had the opportunity to see a few games in the Stadium and even was able to gain access to the field and strike my best heisman pose. It was a classic stadium but was very antiquated and needed to go. The construction of the new stadium is already underway and making great progress.

Pac Ten 'Conf of the QB'

The Pacific 10 is the Conference of Champions , but its also the conference of the Quarterback. Many football fans dismiss the defense out west, but fail to acknowledge that the Pacific 10 has , and still is producing some of the better quarterbacks to play the game. The Pac 10 Currently has 16 quarterbacks on NFL rosters representing every team but Arizona and Stanford. Last season Stanford had 2 QBs on NFL rosters. Ten different Pac 10 quarterbacks started an NFL game in 2004, and 6 started in the final regular season game of 2005. In the past 10 NFL Drafts , 24 Quarterbacks have been selected, the Pacific Ten leads all conferences with 7 QBs drafted during that time. Three Pac Ten Quarterbacks have won Superbowls (Plunkett, Aikman and Elway), and 5 have won the Heisman (Matt Leinhart, Carson Palmer, Jim Plunkett , Gary Beban and Terry Baker).

You are all no doubt familiar with the great College Football rivalry which is Army vs Navy. You may or may not be familiar with the respective mascots, Army has the mule, and Navy the goat. Lets begin with the Army Black Knights and their mule. USMA athletes are referred to as Black Knights or Cadets, but thier official mascot is actually a mule. Army adopted the mule because of its long-standing usefulness in military actions. Steadfast and strong, mules carried supplies to battle for centuries. Also, in its first ever sideline appearance, the Army mule turned and booted Navy's goat. An airborne Navy goat was all the Army corps of cadets needed to see to embrace their mule forever more. Speaking of booted , in 1869 the Navy booted the Army off Goat Island in Rhode Island to build a Torpedo Base. The original mission for the Torpedo Station was to serve as the Navy's experimental center for the development of torpedoes and torpedo equipment, explosives, and electrical equipment. The Navy's initial presence in those days consisted of a few wooden buildings and three civilian employees. The first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy sports was in 1893, when an animal named El Cid (“the Chief”) was turned over to the Brigade by young officers of the USS New York.

The Pac Ten sent 5 teams bowling this season and they compiled a 3-2 postseason mark. Arizona State , Cal and UCLA won bowl games while USC and Oregon lost. Click here for the final football standings. 4 teams finished in the final top 25 standings USC#2/2, Oregon #12/12, UCLA #13/16 and California #25, Arizona State finished outside the top 25 but recieved votes.
